  1. How lifecycle accounting changes the SAF emissions claim

Sustainable aviation fuel is assessed across its supply chain, not only at the aircraft exhaust.

  2. Sustainable aviation fuel: the economics behind the promise

SAF can work within today’s aircraft and fuel systems, but supply, feedstocks and price determine how quickly it scales.

  3. SAF book-and-claim: how an environmental attribute travels without the fuel

Physical sustainable aviation fuel can enter one airport while its verified emissions benefit is assigned to a buyer elsewhere.

Comparing aviation climate claims

Use the full boundary

Aircraft fuel burn, lifecycle emissions from fuel production and non-CO₂ effects answer different questions. A lower lifecycle figure for a fuel does not mean a flight has no exhaust emissions.

Check the accounting

For sustainable aviation fuel claims, look for the feedstock, certification, lifecycle method and safeguards against double counting. Fleet renewal and operational efficiency should be evaluated against a clear baseline.

Questions about this topic

Does lower emissions intensity mean lower total emissions?

Not necessarily. A lower amount per seat-kilometre can coexist with more total traffic. Compare the same lifecycle boundary, occupancy assumption and period, and distinguish CO₂ from wider climate effects.

Does quieter mean lower carbon emissions?

Noise and climate are separate impacts. A noise footprint, a peak level and daily exposure are also different measures. Read each claim’s units, baseline and local context.
